We are pleased to announce that for the 5th year in a row, Joe Berg Scholars will have the opportunity to participate in a truly unique research and mentorship opportunity from the Mayo Clinic in Florida- The Science Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge (SPARK). Science Scholars, join us for a Virtual Information Session with Dr. Al Copeland & Friends on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 7pm.
Unfortunately, last summer's research program was canceled due to the pandemic.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

First of all, let me apologize for the lack of contact since our last virtual seminar back in November. The Joe Berg Leadership team has spent the last few months trying to figure out how we could move forward with our Sophomore Entrance Exam, Graduation, Volunteer Hours & Attendance. Because the situation was constantly in a state of flux and information was constantly changing, we did not want to inundate you with emails. So we chose to wait until we had a (somewhat) clear path for this semester.

Again, we apologize for such a gap in information, we will try to answer all of the questions you may have below. And we look forward to seeing your virtually in the coming weeks.

Graduation, Attendance, and Volunteer Hours

Graduation- Seniors, we are still trying to come up with a solution for an in-person, limited capacity, Graduation Ceremony. We ensure you that will find a way to honor our Graduates, while adhering to the current guidelines and protocols. Our hope is for a May graduation date. We are still trying to finalize a venue and date. But once we have all of the information, our Seniors and their families will be the first to know!

Attendance- In accordance with the Joe Berg Seminars Attendance Policy, students must attend 75% of the seminars offered every semester to maintain their standing in the program. The minimum requirement of 17 was based on an average of 6 seminars offered each semester. Due to the reduced number of virtual seminars during the pandemic, we have adjusted the minimum attendance requirement to 12 seminars. Currently, we do not have a final attendance count for last semester, but we hope to have that information available to you after testing is over and prior to our first virtual seminar of the Spring Semester next month.

Volunteer Hours- Due to a myriad of issues that prevented a significant number of volunteer opportunities over the last year, Joe Berg Leadership has opted to waive the MOSH Volunteer requirement for graduation.

Virtual Seminar Security-

  • All participants will be required to pre-register for each seminar, similar to our Field Trips and Bonus Seminars.
  • Due to a limited number of virtual "seats" please do not register for a seminar that is not within your Joe Berg discipline.
  • Seminar participants will be prohibited from signing-up or signing-in during the seminar, with a Guest profile
  • We also ask that you do not share the URL or corresponding password with anyone.
  • If anyone contacts you for log-in info or asks you to share your password, please direct them to Joe Berg Leadership for assistance.

Seminar Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Please remember that all students must enter and exit the Museum via the back door and we ask that you park or get dropped off in the parking lot at the foot of the bridge. If you are coming from the Main Street bridge, take the IMMEDIATE right turn at the light at the off-ramp, to turn into the museum parking lot. If you are using Waze or Google Maps, select the "Parking Lot" function or use Friendship Fountain as your destination, instead of the Museum, since the programs provide "Door-To-Door" driving directions.

Typically the front entrance to the museum is locked and we cannot open those doors after hours. On a few rare occasions, there is another event scheduled at the same time as our seminar. For safety's sake, please adhere to the established policies for entrance and exit, and try not to venture into other areas of the building. Once the seminar has ended, please make sure that you stand where the Joe Berg Staff can maintain visual contact until your ride has arrived.

Mayo SPARK Program Information

We are pleased to announce that for the 5th year in a row, Joe Berg Scholars will have the opportunity to participate in a truly unique research and mentorship opportunity from the Mayo Clinic in Florida- The Science Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge (SPARK).
  • The SPARK Research Mentorship Program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, provides high school students in Duval and St. Johns counties mentored research experiences in world-class laboratories. This program enables students to develop a basic understanding of scientific research and produce a highly competitive science fair project.
  • SPARK is a Science Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge started in the summer of 2017 as an opportunity for students to be mentored by some of the top researchers in the world.
  • Students who are interested in biomedical science and enrolled as juniors or seniors for the upcoming school year in either Duval or St. Johns Counties, will have an opportunity to design and carry out research projects within the Discovery and Translation Labs at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, for science fair competitions.
  • A minimum of 20 lab hours per week (weekdays and weekends) are required during the summer break for a successful project to be completed for the science fair competitions. When school resumes, a flexible schedule is set up between the student and faculty mentor.
Joe Berg Scholars interested in applying to this truly unique research opportunity can find more info and the application online at-

MOSH Volunteer Opportunities-

Below is the info from Jasmine Turner, Volunteer Coordinator at MOSH and our new point of contact for volunteering. Please contact Jasmine to sign-up for any of the listing volunteer shifts, if you have any questions regarding your volunteer shift or if you can't make your volunteer shift.

Don't Forget to Sign In & Out- On the date of your  volunteer shift, please go to the front desk, ask for the Joe Berg Sign-In book. Sign in there, grab an ID & let them know which event you'll be volunteering for (event name on the sign-up slot), then report to your assigned area.

If you do not sign-in, there is no record of your volunteering, which means you won't get credit for your shift. Also, the museum needs to account for all visitors, staff and volunteers at all times, especially in the event of an emergency, so please ensure that you sign in & out
If you have any questions, please reach out to Jasmine Turner at MOSH.
